ICONIC First Day Toolkit
The first day of school can be scary for many students, especially those who feel uncertain about whether or not they will feel safe, welcome, and included in the classroom. The resources in the First Day Toolkit are intended to support educators in setting a tone of inclusivity in their classrooms on the first day of school and beyond.
The DIversity Welcome
The Diversity Welcome serves to welcome all students and their identities into the classroom space. It can be read aloud or printed to display in the classroom.
The Student Intro Sheet
The Student Intro Sheet supports teachers in practicing ICONIC Pledge items 1 and 2, which are transcribed below.
The Student Intro Sheet comes in two formats: the full-page version and the half-page version. If you’d like to save paper, try the half-page version!
- Honor students’ choices about how they want to be known within the classroom space. Support your students in giving them space to identify how they choose to be identified. This includes in their name, name pronunciation, pronouns, etc.
- Normalize using pronouns in introductions. Practice using pronouns to the best of your ability. This models validating and accepting all gender identities. Acknowledge that if a student is uncomfortable or in an unsafe environment, they can choose not to share.
