The Iconic Pledge

OUR WHY: We decided to create this pledge because, as youth, we see and experience exclusivity in our classrooms. We hope that teachers who take the pledge can foster an environment where students feel welcomed, included, and safe. We hope that students and teachers will also carry these values of inclusivity outside the classroom.

OUR PROCESS: At Bridge Builders CHANGE, we value community input. We created the ICONIC Pledge and then gathered insight from the community about the criteria. We then revised the criteria to ensure that the pledge reflected the community’s needs.

WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE THE ICONIC PLEDGE: Young people struggle to feel safe in their growth as students when their whole selves are not accepted in the classroom space. Many teachers have a desire but are inadequately prepared with the tools to implement inclusive practices in their classrooms. This pledge is an opportunity for teachers to collaborate with students to create classroom environments that celebrate all students and their identities.

Nominate A Teacher

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to notify the teacher(s) I plan to nominate before I nominate them for the ICONIC Pledge?
No, while you most certainly can notify the teacher(s) you plan to nominate before you complete the nomination form, it is not required. When you nominate a teacher, they receive an email inviting them to take the ICONIC Pledge. By nominating a teacher you are not signing them up for the ICONIC Pledge but letting us know who we should invite to take the pledge

What happens when I am nominated for the ICONIC Pledge?
You will receive an email inviting you to take the ICONIC pledge. You are not automatically required to sign the pledge when nominated, but we hope that you will consider joining the ICONIC teachers who have pledged. A nomination is simply a sign that your students believe you are a good fit for a #ICONIC classroom.

Do I need to meet all of the criteria before I take the ICONIC Pledge?
No, one does not need to meet all the criteria before taking the ICONIC pledge. By signing the ICONIC pledge, a teacher is simply stating that they will devote effort into ensuring, to the best of their ability, that they plan to uphold these criteria in their classroom.

I want to take the ICONIC Pledge, but I'm afraid that I can't or don't know how to meet all of the criteria. What should I do?
There are a couple of things that you can do. First, one can email us @change.bridgesusa.org with any questions or to set a time to meet with the committee. Secondly, we will be hosting virtual interest meetings to help explain the criteria and answer any questions teachers may have about implementing the pledge in their classroom. To stay up to date with these interest meetings join the Facebook group here.

How was the ICONIC Pledge created?
At Bridge Builders CHANGE, we value community input. We created the ICONIC Pledge and then gathered insight from the community about the criteria. We then revised the criteria to ensure that the pledge reflected the community’s needs.

What are some other ways I can stay involved in the ICONIC Committee's work?
